Đối với ngô, thì điều quan trọng để tăng số hạt có 3 điều kiện:
1. Thời tiết: trồng ngô thích hợp thời tiết sao cho nhiệt độ <= 37, không cao hơn sẽ giảm năng suất.
2. Phải có đủ nước tưới trong mùa nắng; nhất là giai đoạn bắp trổ cờ - thụ phấn. Nếu thiếu nước cây bắp trỗ cờ chậm, trái ít hạt do thụ phấn kém.<o></o> đặc biệt là Không bị ngập úng trong mùa mưa.

ngô có nhu cầu phân bón khá cao 110 N- 100 P<sub>2</sub>0<sub>5</sub>, 60 K<sub>2</sub>0 Tương ứng với lượng phân bón cho 1000m<sup>2</sup> gồm: Urea 25 kg, 45-50 kg Super lân, 10-12 kg Kali; hoặc thay bằng 15 kg Urea, 20 kg DAP, 12 kg Kali.
và 1 kỹ thuật không thể thiếu là phải vun gốc cho cây ngô trong thời gian ra rễ chân nôm.
