The two-day visit to the Mekong Delta is the most beautiful excursion that can be made from Saigon, or what is the same, Ho Chi Minh City.

Although you can make a one-day trip to the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Min and return in the evening to sleep in Saigon, the truth is that in this way our vision of the Mekong Delta will be quite limited, so we recommend to sleep at least one night in the delta itself to be able to enjoy the next morning the channels less frequented by the tourism and in particular, of some of the several floating markets of the Mekong Delta that are celebrated every morning and that are one of the most beautiful shows in Vietnam.

THE MEKONG RIVER: FROM THE TIBET TO THE MEKONG DELTA IN VIETNAM

The Mekong Delta is where one of the most mythical rivers in the world will die. Only some rivers of the importance of the Amazon or the Nile can boast of such importance for the territories through which they pass. In the Mekong, the maxim that the river is a source of life is scrupulously fulfilled.

Before flowing into the South China Sea in Vietnam, through its famous delta, the Mekong River has traveled about 4500 kilometers, after being born in Tibet and crossing up to six sovereign states: China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and finally, Vietnam. Often, the Mekong also supposes the dividing border between several countries.

It is in the final part of its route, and before reaching the Mekong Delta, when the river separates into two arms: the Lower River or Bassac River and the Upper River or Tien Giang, which in turn ends up dividing into, at least, five main arms at the level of Vinh Long, already in Vietnam. It is for this reason, that beyond the different names with which the river is known in the different countries through which it transits, the river is known in Vietnam as the River of the Nine Dragons.

MEKONG DELTA FOR FREE OR ON ORGANIZED TOUR

Mekong Delta tour and cruises is another of the abundant examples in Vietnam that the excursions organized by the local agencies tend to end up being cheaper and particularly, better usable in terms of time, than those organized by the travelers themselves. And that is especially so when you have rather little time to do the tour and to visit Vietnam.

The ridiculous prices of these tours organized by the multiple agencies located in Ho Chi Min, means that practically all travelers who visit Vietnam autonomously end up hiring many of these tours to the Mekong Delta offered in Ho Chi Minh City.

There are hundreds of agencies in Saigon that sell this and many other tours (such as the one that allows you to visit the Cu Chi tunnels, for example). The vast majority of these agencies are usually intermediaries of a wholesaler who will be responsible for carrying the services to term. It is always a mystery to know in advance whether or not you will be successful with the agency, although it is also true that you can ask travelers who have made the tour in the previous days.

The truth is that despite some negative reviews that some travelers have posted on the internet (and their blogs), particularly in relation to the fact that often the group of tourists is treated more or less borreguil, we had this feeling, only in part, and justified by the price paid. By the way, after comparing several agencies, the prices were very similar. In our case, the 2-day tour to the Mekong Delta from Saigon cost us USD 27 per person sleeping in Homestay (USD 22 if we had slept in the hotel). This price included bus transportation, the boat on the Mekong River, boats on the Mekong's small channels, accommodation, a breakfast, a meal, a dinner, a visit to a honey farm with tasting, another fruit tasting local tropical, a visit to an artisan factory of coconut candies, a visit to the floating markets with a boat and an interesting visit to an artisan factory of rice noodles. Although we are not very fond of visits to these artisan factories, we must say that all of them were quite interesting, allowing us to get closer to what is the local culture. In addition, in all honesty, all of them developed with no commercial pressure, beyond offering you the purchase of a package of coconut candies or a pot of honey, in a polite and cordial way. If you refused the purchase, nobody insisted more.

As I say, the visit to the Mekong Delta in 2 days can be done by free, avoiding visits to these factories or cooperatives. However, it is not easy to coordinate the various means of transport that are necessary to enjoy the Mekong Delta individually and particularly, the boats that offer tours through the various channels, since the price is usually high if they are rented individually. On the other hand, visiting the Mekong Delta in the group allowed us to take several different boats in several different locations and quite apart from each other, which must be much more difficult to carry out by free.

Come on, we would repeat our two-day tour of the Mekong Delta on an organized trip with one of the many local agencies based in Ho Chi Min city, get more information and book vietnam tours tripadvisor today.
